Why Should You Support Taking the Reins?

  1. We are there at the times when our girls need us most. With overcrowding in the Los Angeles Unified School District, many schools are on a year-round schedule and no longer offer the typical summer vacation. Teens are on vacation at different times during the year. When both parents work, teens often have no safe recreational environment and must stay in their homes watching television or playing video games. We offer programs during the week and on the weekend in a safe environment with nurturing adult supervision.
  2. We are centrally located where our teens need us most. Located near Griffith Park, Taking Reins is accessible to girls from the Los Angeles area.
  3. We teach our girls important life skills.
    • To develop responsibility and compassion by taking care of a horse.
    • To develop confidence by challenging themselves mentally and physically.
    • To gain strength and agility by participating in a healthy outdoor, physical activity.
    • To develop tolerance by working in teams with teens from different backgrounds.
    • To practice teamwork through sharing a horse with another girl.
    • To develop leadership skills by assisting less-experienced girls in the care of horses.
    • To have the opportunity to observe and relate to caring adult role models.
    • To develop social skills and friendships through fun, interactive group activities.
    • To experience a sense of accomplishment and pride through mastery of riding and the opportunity to participate in informal competitions.
    • To learn about vocations related to equestrian activities.
    • To express themselves as writers and in other creative works.
